Audio Video Recovery Systems
At Audio Video Recovery System (AVRS), we specialize in professional audio and video restoration services. With over 45 years of experience, we understand that repairing playback equipment is only one part of the recovery process. Damaged or degraded footage often requires specialized restoration to ensure the highest possible quality.
As expert technicians, we have the unique ability to both identify and replicate the technical conditions that caused the damage — allowing us to precisely recover and restore lost information. Our in-depth knowledge of legacy formats and advanced repair systems enables us to deliver accurate, reliable, and lasting results for every project.

Archive Retrieval & Media Digitization
Understanding Tape Degradation
Many organizations and institutions have archives of valuable recordings stored on outdated or deteriorating formats — including reel-to-reel tapes, cassettes, film reels, and other magnetic media. Over time, these materials naturally degrade, putting irreplaceable content at risk of being lost forever.
As technology advances, the playback equipment once used to create these recordings becomes obsolete, making it nearly impossible to access or reproduce the original material in-house. Audio Video Recovery System (AVRS) specializes in archive retrieval and media digitization, using advanced restoration tools and decades of expertise to recover, repair, and preserve historic recordings for long-term digital storage and use.
Even when stored properly, magnetic tapes — including audio and video formats — have a limited lifespan, typically only a few decades. Over time, the materials that make up these tapes begin to deteriorate, making professional recovery essential before valuable content is permanently lost.
Most tapes are made from acetate, polyester, or Mylar bases coated with magnetic oxide and sealed with a lubricant to reduce friction. As tapes age, this lubricant either evaporates or chemically changes, causing the tape to stick, shed oxide, or even seize inside playback equipment. Once the oxide begins to flake off, the recorded information can be lost forever, and tape heads may become clogged.
Depending on the tape’s composition, the binder (the glue holding the oxide to the base) can also degrade, leading to “sticky shed syndrome” or brittle tape that breaks during playback. Without expert restoration and careful handling, these fragile tapes can easily disintegrate, destroying the original media in the process.
